Democracy May Be Dead

I’m not sure Democracy ever really existed. Maybe in some other country. But it seems to me that Democracy is about having choices; and the right to choose between several options.

Throughout American history, various people have run for president as alternative candidates. But people like Ralph Nader, Jesse Ventura and Ross Perot were widely ignored because so many people assumed that, in a two-party system, voting for the third person was “throwing your vote away.”

When we let the media decide for us in advance, we’ve forfeited our right to choose. What if an alternative candidate has good ideas about making our lives better? When was the last time the Republicans or Democrats made things work well?
