A Quote From My Work in Progress

Interesting how self-pity, hatred and the other uglier feelings we loathe and embrace so reluctantly, yet with so much enthusiasm, boil and seethe until we feel directed, or even commanded, to charge headlong into the melee, regardless of the bullets and mortar shrapnel whizzing by our faces, regardless of the hoard awaiting us giddily, deep in the trenches on the opposite side of No Man’s Land, regardless of Mother’s best advice, or what the women’s magazines and the latest pollsters have infallibly decreed, simply because a tiny, shrill voice deep in our hearts, or minds, or souls has begged us quietly, possibly with tears in its eyes, and we have promised to stand up just once more and take charge of a terribly hopeless situation.
