Here’s something I dislike about editing.  When I compose, I throw in every thought that comes into my head, knowing some of them are going to be great, some ok, some not so much. Sometimes I say the same thing two or three different ways, like ancient Hebrew poetry you might find in Proverbs. But most of the time that’s just redundant. So which version do I cut out and which stays? Is it about poetry or about rhetoric?

  1. A successful author (Jack Hunter of Blue Max fame) once told me that if I loved something (sentence or phrase or paragraph), it probably meant it needed to be cut. I always remember that, and many times I realize he was spot on.
