What Comes After The End

I believe we are witnessing the end of human culture, in the artistic sense.

There will always be something, a ballet, an orchestra, a watercolor or oil, that hearkens to an enlightened age.

But the human fascination with things that go beep and five-seconds-ago gratification have overwhelmed our capacity to produce things that make us feel beauty, things that make us feel closer to the divine, and things that make us excited about the possibilities.

Anyone can write a crime novel, or romance, or science fiction or fantasy; if the reader doesn’t mind spur of the moment writing and plot twists.

When was the last time you read a book or watched a movie and discovered you had tears for something that made you feel?

  1. Try Everything Matters. Try The Art of Racing in the Rain. Try The Book Thief. Try Fourth of July Creek (which I just finished a couple of days ago). There are many more I could add to this list. There are still plenty of writers out there trying to write real and meaningful stories. But I do agree with your larger point. Technology is shortening our attention spans to a point where, to survive, art and culture will have to change dramatically.
